Breakdowns

In any experimental process there are inevitably many breakdowns.  I have noticed how easy it is to want to give up in the face of these breakdowns.   More often then not things don’t come out quite how you expected and it can get very frustrating. One must see the breakdown for what it is; a pathway to the next great breakthrough. You never know what might come out of a breakdown.  Use it as an opportunity, not a loss.

  1. Simon, I experience the same “breakdowns” and feelings of frustration in my paintings and drawings. I have stacks of reject drawings that didn’t quite work out the way I wanted. At times I make several attempts to get the drawing right, or paint over a painting and keep re-working it until it fits my vision of what it should be. I have to stay aware and be ready for the many surprises that come along while creating a piece of art. These surprises can make the piece work. The process can be as satisfying and as exciting as seeing/tasting the final creation. You are absolutely correct in using the breakdowns/surprises as an opportunity rather than a loss. As the sculptor Carl Andre said, “You climb a mountain because it’s there – you make art because it’s not there.” Keep on climbing!

  2. Hi Simon. As you know from the Landmark Forum, this is exactly what we’ve been learning/searching for… those breakdowns which cause breakthroughs! It is true, every opportunity shows more opportunity within such a creative & open mind. It takes work, patience, and the ability to practice. I can tell you love the art of cooking, & your creativity in this area will lead you wherever it is you want, & I am Happy for you! Thanks for the inspiration!
